Instagram Reel Dimensions: Plan a Vertical Video
Plan a 9:16 vertical edit, understand canvas size versus source resolution, and check cropping and account requirements before publishing your Reel.
A practical canvas for a full-height vertical edit is 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 aspect ratio. Treat that as an editing target, then check the current upload requirements and preview in the account or publishing tool you will use. It is not a complete specification for every Instagram surface or advertisement.
Aspect ratio and resolution are different
The ratio describes the shape; the pixel dimensions describe the resolution. A 480 × 854 source and a 1080 × 1920 canvas can both be approximately vertical, but they do not contain the same amount of detail.
Choose the generator’s available 9:16 option when you want a vertical composition. The model directory shows which resolutions and durations are configured here. A free starter preset should not be described as a native 1080p export if its delivered file is 480p.
Keep the subject visible after cropping
Place essential faces, products and captions where they remain understandable in the actual preview. Check the full video, its selected cover and any other placement you intend to use. Avoid assuming that one fixed safe-zone diagram applies to every interface.
If the source is horizontal, decide whether to crop it, place it within a vertical layout or generate another composition. Preview the choice rather than stretching the subject into a different shape.
Export and inspect the delivered file
- Check the source file’s width, height and duration.
- Set the intended canvas and arrange the content without distortion.
- Export the edit and inspect the actual file, not only the project settings.
- Open the platform’s upload preview and check the crop, cover, text and audio.
Instagram’s help center and the current account’s upload controls are the references for platform requirements. This guide’s canvas recommendation is not a claim about a ranking benefit.
Where AI clips fit
Use image-to-video for a product or portrait, text-to-video for an invented scene and B-roll for supporting footage. Check the selected model’s quote before generating. If you enlarge a lower-resolution source, review the result for altered detail; increasing the pixel dimensions alone does not demonstrate new captured detail.
FAQ
Does selecting a 1080 × 1920 canvas make a 480p source native 1080p?
No. The editor can resize the source into that canvas, but the source resolution and the export dimensions remain different facts.
Is 9:16 a guaranteed way to get more reach?
No. It is a composition choice for a vertical edit, not a performance guarantee.
Can I generate the entire finished Reel here?
The tools generate short clips. Assemble clips, captions, narration and music in an editor, then check the final upload preview.
Prepare the intended shape, inspect the delivered file and verify the destination’s current requirements before publishing.
