Can ChatGPT Make Videos? A Practical Workflow

Use ChatGPT to plan scenes and prompts, check your account’s current video tools, and turn the result into short MP4 clips with clear costs and limits.

ChatGPT can help turn an idea into a script, shot list and video prompts. Whether your session can also render a video depends on the tools available in that product and account. A written script or a description of a video is not itself an exported video file.

This guide gives a workflow you can use when you have a chat assistant for planning and a separate generator for rendering. Check your account’s current tools before deciding that another service is necessary.

Check the tool that will render the video

Look for an actual video-generation control, supported inputs and a downloadable result. If your chosen product provides those controls, use its current instructions and plan limits. If it returns only text, move the scene prompt to a video generator.

Sora needs a separate availability check. OpenAI’s API deprecation record lists September 24, 2026 as the retirement date for its Sora 2 API. That API notice does not define every ChatGPT interface or independently establish the status of a third-party supplier. A supplier-listed Sora route should not be presented as proof of continuing official API access.

Ask ChatGPT for shots, not an overloaded prompt

Give the assistant a concrete subject, audience and output format. For example:

Plan three separate shots for a short video about a handmade ceramic mug. For each shot, give the subject, one visible action, setting, lighting and camera movement. Keep dialogue, captions and music in separate notes. Do not invent product claims.

Read the plan before sending it elsewhere. Remove private information and check that a visual actually supports what you want to say. Ask for a new shot if the suggested scene would misrepresent the product.

Turn one shot into an MP4

  1. Open Text to Video for an invented scene or Image to Video to begin with an existing picture.
  2. Paste one scene prompt. Add a reference image if the chosen model supports it.
  3. Choose the available duration, resolution and aspect ratio. Review the credit quote.
  4. Sign in, confirm generation and wait for the actual result.
  5. Watch the clip and download the completed MP4. Put multiple clips, captions and narration together in an editor.

FreeVideoGenerator makes individual short clips. Its article tool also suggests shots from pasted text; it does not automatically deliver a finished narrated film.

Understand what the free allowance covers

As checked on October 18, 2026, a new account receives 30 welcome credits. The eligible Seedance 1.0 Pro Fast preset costs 30 credits for 5 seconds at 480p, so the allowance covers one starter clip. Other models use purchased credits. The pricing page and generator show the current costs.

Browsing and drafting prompts do not require a generation purchase. An account is required to generate, and a subscription is optional. Do not assume a model is free just because the site has a free starter allowance.

Review the result before publishing

Check the subject’s appearance, movement and any unexpected objects. For product work, inspect the shape and label against the source image. Add text and narration separately when you need precise wording. A fluent prompt is not a quality guarantee.

For a concrete example of a published result and its settings, see the AI video beginner’s guide. For choosing an engine, use the model directory, where costs and available settings are tied to this site’s configured routes.

FAQ

Does asking ChatGPT for a video always produce a file?

No. Check whether the session actually offers a rendering tool and a download. A script or scene description alone is text output.

Can I reuse a ChatGPT prompt in a video generator?

Yes. Review the prompt, choose a compatible text-to-video route and check its input limits. A starting image requires a route that supports image input.

Do I need to buy a subscription?

A subscription is optional on this site. Starter credits cover the eligible preset, and purchased credit packs are available for further generation.

Can I paste an article and receive a finished narrated video?

The current article workflow makes shot suggestions and individual clips. Narration, captions and assembly are separate editing steps.

Use the assistant for planning and check the tool responsible for rendering. Keeping those steps explicit makes the account requirements, output and cost easier to verify.
