How to Turn a Live Photo into a Video (iPhone and Android, 2026)

Three ways to convert a Live Photo to a video: natively on iPhone, with Google Photos on Android, and with AI when you want motion beyond the original 3 seconds.

A Live Photo captures about 3 seconds of motion around the shutter press — but it only "lives" inside Apple's ecosystem. Post it anywhere else and it becomes a still. Here's how to turn it into a real video file, plus what to do when you want more than those 3 seconds.

Method 1: iPhone (built-in, free)

  1. Open the Live Photo in Photos.
  2. Tap Share (or the ⋯ menu) → Save as Video.
  3. The exported MP4 appears right next to the original in your library.

This preserves the exact captured motion with audio. You can also swipe up on the photo and pick Loop or Bounce effects first, then export — note that effect conversions drop audio.

Method 2: Google Photos (Android and cross-platform)

  1. Open the motion photo in Google Photos.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu → Export → Frame or save as video (wording varies by version).
  3. For iPhone Live Photos uploaded to Google Photos, open the photo and use Save as video from the same menu.

Method 3: AI — when 3 seconds isn't enough

Live Photos cap out around 3 seconds and you can't change what happened. AI image-to-video takes the best frame and generates new motion:

  1. Export the Live Photo as a still (or just screenshot the peak frame at full quality).
  2. Upload it to the Image to Video tool.
  3. Describe the motion you want — "slow cinematic push-in, hair moving in the breeze" — and choose 5 or 10 seconds.
  4. Download the longer, watermark-free MP4.

With Wan 3.0's first-and-last-frame control you can even provide start and end frames from two different Live Photos and let the AI interpolate the transition.

Which should you use?

  • Posting the actual moment (with audio): Method 1 or 2 — it's authentic.
  • Reels/Shorts where you need 5-15 seconds: Method 3 — real clips are too short for the algorithm's completion sweet spot (see our Instagram video length guide).
  • Older photos that were never Live: Method 3 is the only option — and it works on any still image.

Quick tips

  • Live Photo exports are 1080p-ish; AI renders can go to 1080p cleanly.
  • For social, convert to 9:16 with our Reel dimensions guide before posting.
  • Keep the original Live Photo — Apple may add new export options later.
